SUL sponsors India Street Kids Charity

SUL working with Indian street kids charity

SUL Language Schools has begun working with an Indian charity which educates homeless street kids and orphans in Vijayawada.

SUL has chosen to support this charity for children in great need. Apart from financial support, we have now recruited 5 volunteer teachers to help teach English in their annual summer camp. This charity has based its work around the city of Vijayawada, which is in the state of Andhra Pradesh. This city is

275km south-east of Hyderabad
A travel hub – largest railway junction in the South Central section of the Indian Railways
An industrial city – agro-based industries and automobile based industries

The project helps nearly 3,000 street children.

Children who benefit from this charity are either orphans or have been in a very vulnerable position for other reasons. Loving care and education are bringing hope for their personal fulfilment

The five teachers who have so generously donated their time and energy are Harry Woodward (DOS), Hibe Antepli, David Wilson, Laura Rickard and Maryanne Hall. We wish them the very best of luck and look forward to hearing their stories.

SUMMER SCHOOL ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROJECT – CHIGURU CHILDREN’S VILLAGE

The education department runs a residential summer school during the children's summer holidays from mid-April to mid-June. The overall age range is from 7 - 18.

For 2012 the education director wishes to introduce English classes, starting with the 14-16 age group.

These students will already have had English lessons at school but in order to help them to gain a level which would help them in their search for future employment or help them through their higher education, extra classes in the holidays would be of great benefit. In a recent meeting with Christopher Retallack, Director of SUL, an appeal was launched for qualified English language teachers who would be willing to help as volunteers.

The teachers will be teaching in up to 40 degree heat and so will start early at 7.30am. Lunch is followed by rest and then voluntary participation in music, games and drama  activities.

Fullboard accommodation is provided and SUL is paying for International flights up to a maximum of £500. It is anticipated that next year we will ask teachers to fundraise the cost of flights.
